The Regina Red Sox earned a split of their four games over the weekend, posting a 2-2 record from July 9-12 while picking up key victories over the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Okotoks Dawgs.
The weekend wrapped up in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon at Currie Field, where the Red Sox dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 extra-inning decision to the Dawgs. Regina nearly completed another late comeback, but the tying run was cut down at the plate by inches after Justin Simard lined a base hit to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Simard continued his outstanding season with a 5-for-6 performance, scoring twice while adding a double and an RBI. Lance Anderson chipped in with three hits in five at-bats, including a double and an RBI, while reliever David Gordon was exceptional out of the bullpen. The right-hander tossed four innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three without issuing a walk.
Following the weekend split, Regina sits tied for fourth place in the WCBL East Division with a 13-22 record alongside the Weyburn Beavers. The Red Sox remain just 2.5 games behind the third-place Medicine Hat Mavericks, keeping plenty of ground to make up as the regular season enters its final stretch before the All-Star break.
The Red Sox continue their five-game homestand with four more contests this week, welcoming the Brooks Bombers for a two-game set before hosting the Lethbridge Bulls for another two-game series.
Brooks enters the week with a 10-23 record, sitting second-last in the West Division, while Lethbridge has been one of the WCBL’s top clubs at 22-10, good for third in the West. Both Alberta teams have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games.
With only four games remaining before the league pauses for All-Star Weekend, Regina has an opportunity to gain valuable ground in the Eastern Division standings against a pair of Western Division opponents.
Justin Simard continues to pace the Red Sox offense, raising his batting average to .378 after Sunday’s five-hit performance. His 45 hits lead the club and rank among the WCBL’s best.
Brady Bye remains one of the league’s premier power threats, batting .317 with nine home runs and a .378 on-base percentage. Meanwhile, Jalen Meyers has been remarkably consistent since joining the lineup, hitting .478 with 33 hits, three home runs and 11 RBIs in just 21 games.
On the mound, Daniel Crabtree has logged a team-high 35.1 innings this season. David Gordon has emerged as one of Regina’s most reliable arms, carrying a 3.76 ERA across 26.1 innings after his strong relief outing on Sunday. Kris Hahn continues to lead the pitching staff with a stellar 2.88 ERA over 25 innings pitched.
With the playoff race tightening and the All-Star break just days away, the Red Sox will be looking to capitalize on home field and build momentum before the second half of the season.
