REGINA, SK. — The Regina Red Sox couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the 2026 WCBL season.
After opening the campaign with three wins in their first four games, including a weekend sweep of the Medicine Hat Mavericks, the Red Sox sit atop the East Division standings at 3-1 and lead the league in runs scored with 36 through four contests.
Opening Night Rally Stuns Mavericks
The season began Thursday night at Athletic Park in Medicine Hat with a dramatic comeback victory.
Trailing entering the ninth inning, the Red Sox erupted for eight runs in their final at-bat to erase a deficit and secure an 8-6 Opening Night victory.
Starter Aiden Shumaker gave Regina a solid outing, working five innings while allowing just two earned runs. Jake Fowler earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and striking out six Mavericks hitters.
Tough Loss in Moose Jaw
The following night, the Red Sox suffered their lone defeat of the young season, falling 10-9 to the Moose Jaw Miller Express.
Despite the loss, Will Togher provided a memorable moment with his first home run of the season as Regina’s offence continued to show its firepower.
Bye Powers Home Opener Victory
The Red Sox returned to Currie Field on Saturday for their 2026 home opener and treated the hometown crowd to another comeback win.
White City product Brady Bye put together one of the best performances of the WCBL season so far, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI in a 12-9 victory over Medicine Hat.
Justin Simard delivered the game’s biggest swing with a grand slam in the sixth inning, helping erase another deficit and propel the Red Sox to their second straight win over the Mavericks.
Baker Impresses in First Start
The weekend concluded Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory over Medicine Hat, completing the sweep.
Kaegan Baker was outstanding in his first start of the season, allowing just one earned run and one walk over six innings while striking out six.
The Red Sox broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Alex Roux delivered the go-ahead two-run single during the rally, while Brady Bye stayed red hot, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Simard continued his strong start as well, going 2-for-4 with a double.
After a difficult outing on Opening Night, closer Kris Hahn rebounded nicely, striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save.
Bye’s Historic Start
Few hitters across the WCBL have been as productive as Brady Bye through the opening week. The White City native is hitting .500 (9-for-18) with three home runs, 12 RBI and a remarkable 1.606 OPS through four games. His 12 RBI lead the Red Sox and rank among the league leaders.
Simard has also been a key catalyst near the top of manager Rye Pothakos’ lineup. The second baseman is batting .313 with a .450 on-base percentage, one home run, seven RBI and two doubles while going 5-for-16 through four games.
As a team, the Red Sox are averaging nine runs per game while showcasing an offence capable of scoring in bunches.
Five-Game Week Ahead
The schedule doesn’t get any easier this week as Regina prepares for five games over six days.
The Red Sox return to Currie Field on Tuesday night for a showdown with the red-hot Saskatoon Berries. Newcomer Cannon Hensarling is projected to make his Red Sox debut on the mound as Regina looks to extend its winning streak to three games.
Medicine Hat visits Currie Field once again on Thursday before the Red Sox hit the road for a pair of divisional contests, travelling to Weyburn on Friday and Saskatoon on Saturday.
The busy stretch wraps up Sunday afternoon when Regina returns home to host the Swift Current 57’s at Currie Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
With three comeback victories already under their belt and an offence clicking at an elite level, the Red Sox will look to build on their strong start and maintain their spot atop the WCBL standings.
