The Regina Red Sox battled through another demanding stretch of the WCBL schedule, finishing the week with a 3-3 record after six games between July 1-5.
Regina squared off with the Swift Current 57’s four times during the week, earning a split of the season series before closing out the weekend by splitting a Sunday doubleheader against the Moose Jaw Miller Express.
After falling just short in the opener against Moose Jaw by an 8-7 score, the Red Sox responded in impressive fashion with an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.
The offence was powered by home runs from Matteo Pierre and Brady Bye, while Michael Bizier turned in a strong start on the mound. David Gordon shut the door out of the bullpen, tossing three scoreless innings while striking out five batters to help secure the victory.
Bye continued his outstanding season, finishing Game 2 a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. The slugging third basemen has raised his batting average to .342 while continuing to lead the Red Sox with eight home runs and 35 RBIs.
Several Red Sox hitters continue to rank among the club’s top offensive performers heading into another busy week.
Jalen Meyers has enjoyed a tremendous senior campaign, batting .479 with two home runs and an eye-catching .569 on-base percentage through 15 games this season.
Behind the plate, Daniel Castellanos has been a steady presence both defensively and offensively. The catcher is hitting .333 through 16 games with four doubles, 13 RBIs and a .400 on-base percentage.
Will Togher has provided consistency at first base all season, batting .327 with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 28 games.
Meanwhile, shortstop Lance Anderson has made an immediate impact up the middle. Through 19 games, Anderson has collected three home runs, three triples and a double while posting a .522 slugging percentage.
The Red Sox won’t have much time to catch their breath this week as they prepare for another challenging six-game slate.
Regina opens the week on the road Monday in Saskatoon before traveling to Moose Jaw for a pair of games Tuesday. The club then returns home Thursday, July 9, to host the defending champion Okotoks Dawgs before heading to Medicine Hat for a weekend doubleheader. The Red Sox wrap up the week back at Currie Field on Sunday, July 12, for another matchup against the Dawgs.
