As the 2019 Western Canadian Baseball League opener draws near for the Regina Red Sox, let’s take a few minutes to go over the roster before Wednesday’s game at Currie Field against the Yorkton Cardinals.

 

The roster currently stands at 28 players — 15 pitchers, eight infielders and five outfielders/utility players. For brevity purposes, we’ll look at the pitchers today and the infielders, outfielders and utility players on Wednesday.

 

AUSTIN ALARID, LHP

6-foot-2. 230 lbs., University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Austin returns to the Red Sox after playing for the 2017 team. He had a 3-3 record, pitching 49 innings over nine games. Austin struck out 46, walked 19 and finished with a 5.06 ERA.

Austin joined UTRGV after two seasons at Eastern Arizona College. In his first season with UTRGV, Austin pitched seven innings, striking out nine and walking seven. He had a record of 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA.

 

JOEY ARELLANO, RHP

6-foot-0, 180 lbs., New Mexico State University

Joey just finished his freshman season at NMSU with a 3-1 record. In 24 innings pitched he struck out 34, walked eight and posted an ERA of 1.75.

 

MICHAEL BATTEN, RHP

6-foot-5, 210 lbs., Warner University

In his senior season, Michael pitched 61 innings, striking out 83 and walking 32. He finished with a 4-4 record and one save.

 

DYLAN BELLS, LHP

6-foot-4, 180 lbs., Frank Phillips College

Dylan, a Regina product, returns for his second season with the Red Sox. In his rookie season, Dylan posted a 3-1 record in 61 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 32, walked 17 and had a 4.38 ERA. In the playoffs, he was 0-2 with 25 strikeouts, seven walks and an ERA of 4.42.

This season at FPC, Dylan posted a record of 8-2 with one save in 47 2/3 innings pitched. He had 61 strikeouts and 17 walks.

 

FERNANDO BURGOS, RHP

6-foot-5, 230 lbs., Eastern New Mexico University

Fernando just finished his junior season at ENMSU, going 3-5 with 53 innings pitched. He posted an ERA of 6.79 with 42 strikeouts and 44 walks.

 

JACKSON COFER, LHP

6-foot-0, 190 lbs., University of Nevada Las Vegas

Jackson just finished his redshirt senior season after transferring from Utah Valley. Jackson served as the closer for UNLV, posting a 2-2 record with 10 saves. He had an ERA of 3.07 with 27 strikeouts and seven walks.

 

GRANT DOWTY, LHP

6-foot-2, 195 lbs., Scottsdale Community College

Grant had a 3-5 record for SCC this past season, totalling 53 innings pitched with 53 strikeouts, 42 walks and an ERA of 5.43. He has committed to Minot State University for next season.

 

NICK FERNGREN, RHP

6-foot-6, 245 lbs., Southeastern University

Nick had a strong junior season, finishing with a 3-0 record in 21 1/3 innings pitched. He had 36 strikeouts, 13 walks and a 3.38 ERA.

 

BAYLOR GIANNINI, RHP

6-foot-10, 260 lbs., Arizona Christian University

Baylor had a 1-1 record in his senior season, pitching 23 innings with 32 strikeouts, 19 walks and an ERA of 8.22.

 

MATT GOERTZEN, RHP

6-foot-3, 210 lbs., NW Oklahoma State

In his junior season, Matt had a record of 5-4, pitching 57 2/3 innings with 39 strikeouts, 12 walks and an ERA of 5.93.

 

JAYDEN HARTLE, RHP

6-foot-3, 220 lbs., Southeastern University

In 61 2/3 innings pitched during his junior season, Jayden finished with a 7-2 record and one save. He had 72 strikeouts, 32 walks and a 3.79 ERA.

 

MARK LOPEZ, RHP

5-foot-9, 190 lbs., New Mexico State University

Mark threw three innings in his freshman season at NMSU with one strikeout, one walk and a 9.00 ERA.

 

MAX LUDKA, RHP

6-foot-0, 190 lbs., Aquinas College

Max had an 0-5 record in his senior season, pitching 42 innings with 53 strikeouts, 35 walks and an ERA of 6.15. In his junior season, he was 5-4 in 75 innings pitched with 78 strikeouts, 35 walks and a 3.12 ERA.

 

BRANDON REDERN, RHP

6-foot-2, 260 lbs., Coppin State University

Brandon had a record of 3-2 with two saves in his senior season. In 46 1/3 innings pitched he had 52 strikeouts, 19 walks and an ERA of 3.11.

 

DANTE RICHARDSON, RHP

6-foot-3, 200 lbs., Pittsburg State University

Dante finished his senior season with a bang, pitching a complete game victory over the University of Central Oklahoma in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association playoffs. Dante threw 141 pitches in the 2-1 victory, striking out 12 while scattering five hits and three walks.

In 15 regular season appearances in 2019, Dante had 50 strikeouts, 19 walks and an ERA of 2.77 in 34 innings pitched.
