The Regina Red Sox picked up a much-needed victory to close out the week, defeating the Okotoks Dawgs 10-9 in dramatic fashion on Thursday night at Currie Field to snap a three-game losing streak.
Regina finished the July 6-9 stretch with a 1-3 record, improving to 12-20 on the season. Despite sitting sixth in the WCBL East Division, the Red Sox remain firmly in the playoff race, trailing the fourth and final postseason spot by just half a game entering a pivotal weekend.
The Red Sox now head to Medicine Hat for a crucial two-game series against the Mavericks on Friday and Saturday before returning home Sunday to begin a five-game homestand, starting with the Okotoks Dawgs. With the WCBL All-Star break scheduled for July 18-20, the upcoming stretch presents a significant opportunity for Regina to make up ground in the standings.
Walk-Off Win Ends Skid
Thursday’s victory over Okotoks may prove to be one of Regina’s biggest wins of the season.
Jake Fowler delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning, lining a single to right field that scored Brady Bye and gave the Red Sox a thrilling 10-9 walk-off victory.
Starter Kris Hahn provided a strong outing on the mound, allowing just two runs over six innings before the offence did enough late to secure the win.
Will Togher powered the attack, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run and an 4 RBI. The right-handed hitting first basemen continues to be one of Regina’s most consistent hitters, batting .328 with a .369 on-base percentage, four home runs and 26 RBIs in 31 games.
Fowler has also become one of the Red Sox’s most valuable two-way players this season. The versatile right-hander is batting an impressive .467 (14-for-30) while also posting a 4.11 ERA across 15.1 innings on the mound. He capped off Thursday’s performance by going 4-for-5 and delivering the game-winning hit.
Jalen Meyers continues to ignite Regina’s offence from the top of the lineup. Since joining the Red Sox, Meyers is batting an incredible .517 through 18 games with two home runs, four doubles, a .608 on-base percentage and a 1.291 OPS. His 31 hits already rank fourth on the club despite playing just over half the season.
Against Okotoks, Meyers reached base six times, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Weekend Preview: Playoff Race Tightens
The Red Sox now turn their attention to what could be their biggest series of the season.
Regina opens a two-game road set against the Medicine Hat Mavericks, who enter the weekend at 15-18 and currently occupy third place in the East Division. The Red Sox sit just two games behind Medicine Hat, meaning a sweep would pull Regina even with the Mavericks in the standings.
Medicine Hat has won three of its last four games and is 6-4 over its last 10 contests. The Mavericks also own a +19 run differential compared to Regina’s -25.
Offensively, the Mavericks are led by Carter Roth, who is batting .375 with a .438 on-base percentage in 34 games this season. Frankie Giacalone provides the power with nine home runs, while Blake Dale leads the club with 35 RBIs.
The Red Sox have gone 4-6 over their last 10 games but have shown flashes of the offence capable of carrying them back into playoff position. A strong weekend would not only tighten the East Division race but also build momentum heading into a five-game homestand that begins Sunday afternoon against the Okotoks Dawgs at Currie Field.
With every game carrying playoff implications, the Red Sox have a golden opportunity over the next week to continue climbing the East Division standings before the league pauses for the All-Star break.
