Regina, Sask. — The Regina Red Sox remain firmly in the hunt in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested WCBL East Division race.
Through nine games, the Saskatoon Berries sit atop the division with a 7-3 record, but the Red Sox are right in the thick of the playoff picture. Regina enters the week tied with the Medicine Hat Mavericks for second place at 4-5, while their +6 run differential ranks fifth-best in the entire WCBL.
The Red Sox snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon with an emphatic 10-2 victory over the Swift Current 57’s at Currie Field. The win came after a pair of tough one-run road losses earlier in the weekend, falling 4-3 to Weyburn on Friday before dropping a 3-2 decision to Saskatoon on Saturday.
Despite the narrow defeats, strong starting pitching continued to be a major strength for manager Rye Pothakos’ club.
Friday in Weyburn, left-hander Samuel Jackson turned in another quality outing, striking out eight batters across six innings while allowing four earned runs. On Saturday, right-hander Daniel Crabtree was outstanding against the Berries, surrendering just one run on three hits over six innings while striking out four and walking one.
The highlight of the weekend came Sunday as Kaegan Baker delivered one of the most dominant pitching performances of the WCBL season. The right-hander struck out 14 batters over seven innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits while walking only one batter. His performance helped lead Regina to a convincing victory and halt the club’s recent skid.
Offensively, Brady Bye, Mason Tafoya and Chance Descalchuk each collected two hits in Sunday’s win as the Red Sox broke out for 10 runs.
The bullpen has also continued to provide stability, led by reliever Jake Fowler. Through eight innings this season, Fowler has allowed just one earned run while striking out nine batters.
At the plate, Bye continues to be one of the league’s most dangerous hitters. Through nine games, the infielder is batting .410 with four home runs and 16 RBI, leading the Red Sox offense.
Justin Simard has also been a consistent contributor, posting a .359 batting average and .432 on-base percentage while driving in 11 runs. Ty Martinez has provided quality at-bats throughout the lineup and currently owns a .432 on-base percentage.
The recent additions of Mason Canter, Mason Tafoya and Alex Roux have helped deepen the lineup considerably. Canter enters the week with a .395 on-base percentage, while Tafoya sits at .390 and Roux at .359, giving Regina multiple options capable of creating traffic on the bases.
New Faces Arriving to Strengthen Red Sox Lineup
The Regina Red Sox are expected to receive a significant boost to their roster this week as several key additions arrive in the Queen City.
Catcher Daniel Castellanos and infielder Jalen Meyers have both touched down in Regina and are expected to provide immediate depth to an already competitive lineup.
The club is also eagerly awaiting the arrival of infielder Lance Anderson later this week. Anderson brings an impressive defensive pedigree, earning Gold Glove honors during his collegiate career. His addition is expected to strengthen Regina’s infield defense while adding another experienced bat to the lineup.
Red Sox manager Rye Pothakos also announced the signing of catcher Carson Cox, an NCAA Division I product from Indiana State University.
Week Ahead
The Red Sox face a critical stretch this week with five games against East Division rivals.
Regina opens the week on Tuesday night in Weyburn before returning home to host the Beavers on Wednesday and Friday at Currie Field. Sandwiched between those contests is a Thursday matchup against the division-leading Saskatoon Berries.
The club will then travel to Saskatoon on Saturday to conclude the week.
With the East Division standings still tightly packed, the upcoming schedule presents a significant opportunity for the Red Sox to gain ground on the Berries and establish themselves as one of the division’s top contenders heading deeper into June.
If Regina’s starting rotation continues its recent dominance and the offense maintains its ability to get runners on base throughout the lineup, the Red Sox could find themselves climbing the standings by week’s end.
