Regina, Sask. — The Regina Red Sox may finally have Mother Nature on their side this week as they prepare for a busy stretch featuring seven games in six nights, including a pair of makeup doubleheaders against East Division rivals.
Regina opens the week on Tuesday night in Moose Jaw against the red-hot Miller Express, who sit second in the East Division with a 12-7 record and have won seven of their last 10 games. The Sox will then head to Weyburn on Wednesday for a twin bill beginning at 6:00 p.m. before traveling to Swift Current on Thursday for another doubleheader, with games scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The Red Sox enter the week with a 7-10 record and sit 4-6 over their last 10 contests. Regina has scored 101 runs while allowing 102 through its first 17 games of the season.
Following Thursday’s doubleheader, the Sox will enjoy an off day on Friday before returning home to Currie Field for five consecutive games. Regina hosts Moose Jaw and Swift Current this weekend as part of an important stretch against divisional opponents.
Splitting Results Last Week
The Red Sox showed flashes of strong baseball throughout the week, highlighted by a dominant 11-2 victory over the Weyburn Beavers on Saturday night at Tom Laing Park.
After suffering a 12-1 loss in Saskatoon on Friday, Regina responded with one of its most complete performances of the season. Starter Samuel Jackson delivered five strong innings, allowing just two runs while striking out seven batters.
The bullpen was equally impressive as Zander Oddie-Senger shut the door with four scoreless innings, allowing only one walk while striking out seven.
Offensively, first baseman Will Togher paced the attack with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double, while Mason Tafoya added three hits of his own, including a double. The Red Sox recorded eight multi-hit performances in the victory.
Earlier in the week, Regina blanked the Saskatoon Berries 6-0 at Currie Field behind a masterful outing from Kaegan Baker. The win came one night after the Red Sox were shut out 9-0 by Swift Current.
Baker Earns SaskTel Saskatchewan Player of the Week Honours
Red Sox ace Kaegan Baker was recognized for his outstanding performance against Saskatoon, earning SaskTel Saskatchewan Player of the Week honours for the period between June 15 and June 21.
The right-hander from Southwestern Oklahoma State University threw eight scoreless innings against the Berries, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out 11 batters in a 93-pitch masterpiece.
The victory improved Baker’s record to 3-0 on the season. He currently leads the WCBL with a sparkling 0.86 ERA and has recorded 31 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched.
Roster Notes
The Red Sox also announced several roster moves this week.
Starting pitcher Aiden Shumaker has signed a professional contract with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League after making three starts for Regina this season. The right-hander posted a 4.80 ERA before earning the opportunity to move to the professional ranks.
Regina has also released pitcher Tristan Eberle.
Joining the club is right-handed pitcher Michael Bizier of Repentigny, Quebec. The 5-foot-10 hurler spent the spring season at Dodge City Community College, where he appeared in 17 games and logged 51 innings during his freshman campaign.
With seven games scheduled over the next six days, the Red Sox will rely heavily on their pitching depth as they look to climb the East Division standings heading into the heart of the summer schedule.
