The Regina Red Sox endured one of their busiest stretches of the season last week, battling both their East Division rivals and Mother Nature.

After weather postponed the completion of Monday’s matchup in Moose Jaw, the Red Sox played back-to-back doubleheaders in Weyburn and Swift Current, finishing the week with a 1-3 record between June 24-28.

Regina’s contest against the Moose Jaw Miller Express on June 23 was halted by rain in the fifth inning with the Red Sox trailing 9-2. The game will be resumed at a later date.

The condensed schedule continued Tuesday in Weyburn, where the Red Sox split a twin bill with the Beavers. Regina dropped the opener 10-4 before bouncing back with an impressive 4-2 victory in Game 2.

The nightcap featured one of the club’s biggest hits of the week. Trailing late while being no-hit, Raine Kreklwetz stepped to the plate in the sixth inning and ripped a go-ahead two-run triple, breaking up Logan Kinter’s no-hit bid and giving the Red Sox a lead they would not surrender.

From there, the Red Sox traveled to Mitchell Field in Swift Current for another doubleheader Thursday, but came up short in both contests, falling 4-2 in Game 1 before dropping a heartbreaking 7-6 decision in the finale.

Offence Continues to Produce

Despite the challenging week, Regina’s lineup continues to swing the bats well.

Returning utilityman Jalen Meyers has been one of the hottest hitters in the entire WCBL since rejoining the Red Sox. Through his first 10 games back in Regina, Meyers is batting an incredible .556 with a .636 on-base percentage while collecting five extra-base hits, including three doubles and two home runs. Hitting atop the lineup most nights, he also owns a remarkable 1.525 OPS.

Justin Simard has continued to provide consistency from the middle of the order. The veteran enters the week batting .373 with a .441 on-base percentage, while his .947 OPS ranks second on the club behind Meyers.

Newcomer Lance Anderson has made an immediate impact both offensively and defensively. The slick-fielding shortstop has stabilized the infield while batting .310 through 13 games with five extra-base hits, including two home runs, two doubles and a triple.

Although Brady Bye has cooled off after his torrid start to the season, the slugging first baseman still leads Regina with five home runs and 23 RBIs.

Bullpen Anchoring the Staff

The Red Sox bullpen continues to be one of the team’s strengths.

Jake Fowler has been dominant in relief, posting a 2.25 ERA over 12 innings while striking out 14 batters.

Zander Oudie-Senger has been equally reliable, recording a 2.57 ERA across 14 innings with 16 strikeouts, consistently providing quality innings in high-leverage situations.

New Faces Arrive

Manager Rye Pothakos has continued to strengthen the roster as more collegiate players arrive following the completion of their spring seasons.

The Red Sox have welcomed freshman right-hander Michael Bizier along with Point University pitchers Garrett Mullins and Vittorio Iacobucci.

BYU third baseman Cooper Jones has also joined the club, while centre fielder Ian Montz has returned to Regina and is expected to patrol the outfield for the remainder of the summer.

Seven Games on Tap

Weather permitting, the Red Sox are set for another demanding week with seven games scheduled.

Regina opens the week Monday night by hosting the Medicine Hat Mavericks for the final meeting between the two clubs this season at Currie Field.

Canada Day will feature a pair of games as the Red Sox welcome the Swift Current 57’s for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m., with Game 2 scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

With several new additions now settling into the lineup and more reinforcements arriving, the Red Sox will look to capitalize on a busy stretch of home games as they continue their push up the WCBL East Division standings.
