Western Canadian Baseball League COVID- 19 Update
April 30th, 2020

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Media Release

The Western Canadian Baseball League has made the difficult but necessary decision to, at minimum, delay the start of the 2020 season until a late June or early July start date with other measures also being considered due to the COVID- 19 pandemic.
“Although the circumstances are not moving quickly enough at present in our favor, we want to look at all options in order to play this year.” WCBL President Kevin Kvame stated following a Board of Governors call on Wednesday night. “The start of the season as scheduled in late May is impossible to maintain at this point and thus, we regrettably need to make this decision. At the same time however, we express that with ever changing dynamics and circumstances on this pandemic and the measures needed to curtail it, we still want to maintain hope that a partial season can be played should health and government positions on the pandemic change enough to make it feasible. We know our talented players want to play and we know the communities are looking for positive, family-friendly activities to return. We are embracing that role, whenever that green light is turned on.” Kevin added.
The League wants to also express that all decisions whether to have games at some or all of our ballparks this year will completely depend on guidance, advice, and approval at the local and provincial governments and their health officials.
“The health and safety of our players, coaches, officials, and fans are paramount in all of our decision making and we will not be doing anything that is not in accordance with the public health authorities and governments of the respective provinces,” the league President went on to say.
The League is currently working on a legacy project that will allow all teams to continue to show our community pride and brand in even better ways when teams are able to return. It is hoped that this will be a joint project of the federal, provincial, and local governments plus key stakeholders in other industries.
The WCBL is the premier league in Canada for summer collegiate baseball. It is a 10-team league encompassing 6 teams in Alberta and 4 teams in Saskatchewan. Each team has a positive, community driven family friendly environment through the avenue of summer fun at the ballpark. The League has existed in various forms since the 1930’s.
